Philadelphia Underground: Revitalization of the Broad Street Pedestrian Concourse

Philadelphia is a vibrant city that emphasizes the arts. However, underneath the Avenue of the Arts is a vast potential unacknowledged. The Philadelphia Underground project takes this central location and creates venues for street artists and performers as well as providing practical amenities for the daily business population and tourists in the area. This project takes the energy of the city to all of its levels and aims to activate the city owned space while encouraging diverse interaction and increased ridership of the public transportation system.

Design of this space focused on movement and rest, thereby the programatic elements are "stops" along this transit corridor. Color is used for its energy and to encourage a sense of whimsy and momentum with the transitions between areas. Connection to the city is made by visual emphasis of the access points as well as via colors borrowed from the city itself - like the Mummers and the LEDs of the Broad Street building facades. Interaction between users is encouraged by the display layout and grouped seating as well as the visual openness of the space.
